Shopping in Amsterdam Jordaan
We have two shops in the Jordaan and we live here, so we get this question a lot: what should we do in the neighbourhood? Below is what we usually say. One walk, roughly an hour if you don't go into anything, from Central Station to our door on Nieuwe Leliestraat, then five minutes further to the Mini Factory, where the T-shirts get printed. Addresses and opening hours are in the last block.

How to get there?
Leave the station on the city side, cross the water and keep right until you see Haarlemmerstraat. Take it. It gets better as you go: the first stretch is a bit of everything, after the Herenmarkt it turns into Haarlemmerdijk and that is the part we like. Small shops, a couple of bakeries, The Movies cinema near the end. Twenty minutes if you don't stop anywhere. You will stop.

Noordermarkt on a Saturday
At the end of Haarlemmerdijk turn left, follow Brouwersgracht along the water and after a few minutes you are on the Noordermarkt. Saturday is the farmers' market: cheese, bread, mushrooms, a lot of dogs. Monday morning there is a flea market with fabric and second-hand clothes. On other days it is a square with a church and two cafés, which is also fine. The Westerstraat starts here.

Along Prinsengracht to Nieuwe Leliestraat
From the Noordermarkt walk down Prinsengracht with the water on your left. This is the prettiest ten minutes of the walk and the busiest, because the queue for the Anne Frank House is at the end of it. Just before you get there, turn right into Nieuwe Leliestraat. Number 6 is us. The T-shirts, the sweaters and the Pilgrim jewellery are all in that shop, and whoever is behind the counter knows where to eat.

The Mini Factory, where we print
Five minutes on, across the Bloemgracht, is Eerste Bloemdwarsstraat 14. That is the Mini Factory: a small shop at the front, the print studio behind it. Everything with our print on it is made there, so this is the shorter answer to where the shirts come from. Open Monday to Saturday, twelve to six. We are there most days ourselves, so questions about the neighbourhood can go there too.

If you have time left
South of us the Nine Streets begin, nine short streets crossing the canals, with shops and coffee. Busy at the weekend, worth it on a weekday. Or do the opposite and walk back to Central Station for the free ferry to NDSM, an old shipyard on the other side of the water with a few restaurants and a lot of space. There are no shops there. That is why we go.

Our two shops in the Jordaan
Almost Summer, Nieuwe Leliestraat 6, open every day from 11:00 to 18:00. The Mini Factory, Eerste Bloemdwarsstraat 14, 1016 KS Amsterdam, Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 18:00, phone 020-4228721. Everything on this site is in the shops too, and trying on a sweater beats guessing a size at home. Lost? Most people in the Jordaan know where we are. Ask them.
